The present painting is a characteristically multi-figured composition by Jordaens. It exists in numerous versions executed by different hands, although most of these paintings have been attributed to Jordaens. Some of the figures depicted here can also be found in other paintings by Jordaens. The text inscribed at the upper margin translates as follows: ‘Gambling, women, and wine drive a man into poverty while he laughs.’ The painting thus contains a moral message, personified by gamblers and drunkards in objectionable female company.
