![Jan Brueghel II - Old Master Paintings Jan Brueghel II - Old Master Paintings](/fileadmin/lot-images/38A150421/normal/jan-brueghel-ii-2892239.jpg)
(Antwerp 1601–1678)
A garland of flowers surrounding a cartouche with the Holy Family and the Infant Baptist,
oil on panel, 83.2 x 63.8 cm, framed
On the reverse the emblems of the City of Antwerp – two hands and a castle – and the panelmaker’s initials, probably to be identified with Guilliam Aertssen (1612–1662).
We are grateful to Klaus Ertz for confirming the attribution of present painting following first-hand examination (written communication). Ertz dates the painting to the late 1630s. He writes: ‘The condition of the present painting can be rated as excellent. The flowers, each of which seem like a small portrait and all of which are of equal importance, are typical of the artist’s late period. The wreath appears to be almost three-dimensional thanks to the multitude of tiny blossoms and stems between the larger flowers. The paint layers have been applied in a thick impasto, with the colours still giving a brilliant impression.’ For the figures and the landscape enclosed by the floral wreath, Ertz assumes the hand of an unidentified painter from the circle of Peter Paul Rubens.
