Hans van Essen

Hans van Essen - Old Master Paintings

(Antwerp 1587/89 – after 1648 Amsterdam)
A fish market,
signed at lower left: HVEssen,
oil on canvas, 111 x 189.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
from the property of a noble Belgian family

Not much is known about Hans van Essen, who left behind only a small collection of work. After spending time as an apprentice under Symon Haeck (Hoeck) in Antwerp, he became master of the Gild of St Lukas in 1609. In 1614 he moved to Amsterdam, and is mentioned to have still been there in 1648. His still lifes are close in style to the works of Peter Binoit, as well as Daniel and Isaac Soreau. The present painting, till now unpublished, also betrays the influence of Pieter Aertsens.
