Attributed to Sebastiano Giuliense, called Il Sebastianone

Attributed to Sebastiano Giuliense, called Il Sebastianone - Old Master Paintings

(active in Milan before 1670)
Portrait of a boy wearing a green suit,
oil on canvas, 137.7 x 92.7 cm, framed

We are grateful to Filippo Maria Ferro, who, based on a photograph, has suggested the attribution.

Sebastiano Giuliense is an artist whose oeuvre has only been the subject of art historical analysis during recent years, although his works were frequently recorded in the inventories of the villas or city palaces of Milan. He appears to be something of a missing link between Cittadini and Ceruti (see, for example, A. Morandotti, Pittori della realtà nella Lombardiadi Giacomo Ceruti: quesiti intorno a Pietro Bellottie a Sebastiano Giuliense, il Sebastianone, in: Nuove Studi. Rivista Di Arte Antica E Moderna XVII, vol. 18, Trento, 2012, pp. 229–242). He also painted large-scale genre scenes and cityscapes, such as View of the Fort of Milan, in which the handling of the figures is very similar to that in the painting offered here, while the execution of the dresses recalls the elaborate suit worn by the present sitter.

On the basis of the dress, a date of c. 1660–1670 can be proposed. The dimensions of the present painting seem to correspond to a canvas format used by Giuliense on at least two other occasions: in his Portrait of Ippolito Mozano, Milan, private collection, approx. 145 x 87 cm, and in the Portrait of a Child, Isola Bella, Borromeo Collection, approx. 140 x 90 cm.
