Lot No. 4

Lucas Cranach the Younger and Workshop

Lucas Cranach the Younger and Workshop - Old Master Paintings

(Wittenberg 1515–1586 Weimar)
The Crucified Christ with donors and their coat of arms,
oil on panel, 70 x 59 cm, framed

Provenance:
Sale Sotheby’s, London, 6 July 1994, lot 40 (as ‘workshop of Lucas Cranach II’);
Private collection, Belgium

Dieter Koepplin has confirmed the present painting to be a work by Lucas Cranach the Younger and his workshop on the basis of a photograph.

In the Frankfurt Cranach catalogue of 2008 one can read about Lucas Cranach II: ‘It appears likely that Lucas Cranach’s second-born son, who had been baptised to the name of his father, began working in the family’s workshop when he was still a child. Whereas the works by his elder brother Hans seem to deviate just very slightly from the rest of the workshop’s production, it is practically impossible to identify the share Lucas the Younger had in it until his father’s death. For him it seemed out of the question to develop his own stylistic approach, for he considered it his task to seamlessly continue the supraindividual style of the workshop.’

Werner Schade has suggested assigning the present painting to the circle of Lucas Cranach the Younger.
