German School, mid-18th century
Portrait of Francis George of Schönborn, Elector of Trier (1682–1756),
oil on canvas, 228 x 119 cm, framed
Provenance:
nobility, Southern Germany
Francis George Count of Schönborn was the son of Melchior Frederick Count of Schönborn, state minister of the Electorate of Mainz, and Maria Anna, Baroness of Boineburg and Lengsfeld. Three of his brothers held the office of Prince-Bishop of Constance, Speyer, and Würzburg respectively. In 1729, Francis George was appointed Archbishop and Elector of Trier and after three years also became Prince-Bishop of Worms and Prince-Provost of Ellwangen. He was considered a pious man, but was also an advocate of the Enlightenment. Like all of his relatives, he was an obsessive builder. After the Elector’s death, this exceptional series of members of the House of Schönborn on the thrones of bishops and archbishops in the German Empire, which had lasted for an entire century, came to an end.
