Wolfgang Hollegha is the landscape painter amongst the group of artists associated with the Galerie St. Stephan. Mikl’s sense for composing a nude corresponds to Hollegha’s feeling for the organic and vegetative. Like Rainer, for a short time his paintings were ‘fantastical’, with depictions of witches, a ghost boat, before an abstract, distorted but non-surreal vision of nature prevailed. Still under the influence of Mikl, he first used vegetable matter as tools, as weapons, this spontaneous transcription compelled to follow the strict laws of construction. Associations with machines are not far off. Then Hollega freed himself from this confining corset; colour triumphed…
