Lot No. 917

Arman *

Arman * - Contemporary Art - Part 2

(Nice 1928–2005 New York)
Africash, 1995, unique cast, accumulation of West African banknotes in synthetic resin, signed Arman on a banknote, and various banknotes signed César, Ben, Frank Stella, Corneille, etc., 87 x 35 x 28 cm

The work has been registered at Arman Studio Archives, New York with the no. APA # 8032.95.034.

In the early sixties Arman started working with a non conventional sculpture material stating polyester ‘as a means of embedment ... to create the effect of objects floating in air’. The artist ‘used a disposable mould in Teflon which was later destroyed to retrieve the sculpture. The sculpture was then polished. The polyester used was a ‘mass cast’ polyester which allowed me [Arman] to cast without superimposition of layers’. […]
‘I have a very strong feeling about the object. First, on account of my environment. My father was selling antiques and things and I was concerned with the object. Secondly, my feeling of quantity. When I was a child, a quantity of objects was always interesting and I was always transforming those quantities. And, I guess I was in a sense a collector -- I have the instinct of a rat pack collector.’
