When I started in 58 to cut out the canvases until the frame was in view, it is certain that I was at odds with the kind of art hitherto practiced. Canvas, brush, (I have nothing against these dear tools, which I continue to use, albeit with a different consciousness) spatulas of colour orgiastic in their celebration of the informal era, strike me as elements to be deconstructed from scratch.
