Private collection, Germany, since 1974

The present lot is accompanied by letters written by Laurens J. Bol, dated 11 August 1974 and Werner Sumowski, dated 6 February 2001, confirming the attribution.

The German-Netherlandish artist Johannes Spilberg was court painter of Elector Palatine Johann Wilhelm. After training with his father, he moved to Antwerp to join the studio of Peter Paul Rubens. After Rubens’s death that same year, Spilberg started a seven-year apprenticeship under the Rembrandt pupil Govert Flinck in Amsterdam. In 1650 Spilberg began his activity at the Düsseldorf court.
