Thomas Heeremans
(Haarlem 1641–1694)
A river landscape with ferryboats, signed and dated at lower right: TH MAN 1685,
oil on canvas, 86.6 x 109.6 cm, framed
Thomas Heeremans specialised in painting river landscapes in both summer and winter. Until just a few years ago almost nothing was known about the artist, until I. van Thiel-Stroman discovered a document, in which he was mentioned (published in N. Köhler [ed.], Painting in Haarlem The Collection of the Frans Hals Museum, Ghent 2006 p. 202f). In a notarial act of 1659 it was recorded that Heeremans had studied under an artist called Everdingen. According to van-Thiel-Stroman this can only refer to the genre and history painter Cesar van Everdingen (1616/7-1678), since by 1652 the landscape painter Allaert van Everdingen had already moved from Haarlem to Amsterdam. However, in Heerman’s oeuvre no trace is to be found of the neo-classical figure painter Everdingen; it is unheard of for his works to contain only human subjects. Heeremans, who also worked as an art dealer, joined the Guild of Saint Luke in Haarlem in 1664.
