Georges Desmarées

Georges Desmarées - Old Master Paintings

(Gimo 1697–1776 Munich)
Portrait of an elegant lady in a hunting costume, probably Electress Maria Anna of Bavaria, Princess of Saxony (1728–1797),
oil on canvas, 112.4 x 85.1 cm, framed

We are grateful to Helmut Börsch-Supan for identifying the present painting as a work by Desmarées. The painting is accompanied by a certificate.

The present portrait is a characteristic work by this artist and compares well to his portrait of the electress at Augustusburg Castle in Brühl, dated to around 1754. In both paintings, the sitter wears a red and gold hunting costume without any medals or other attributes of her rank. Börsch-Supan also compares our painting to a portrait sold at Dorotheum, Vienna on 6 September 2007 (lot 150). Maria Anna of Bavaria was the daughter of Frederick August II, Elector of Saxony (King August III of Poland). In 1747 she married Maximilian III Joseph, Elector of Bavaria, the last member of his family line, since their marriage was to remain childless. She spent her years as a widow on Fürstenried Castle near Munich.
