Lot No. 58 #

Pieter de Bloot

Pieter de Bloot - Old Master Paintings

(c. 1601–1658 Rotterdam)
A barn interior with peasants eating and warming themselves by an open fire,
oil on panel, 37 x 57 cm, framed

Provenance:
R. H. Ward Collection, London, 1930;
with J. R. Bier, Haarlem, 1959;
Private collection, Germany, since 1964

The present lot is accompanied by a certificate from Walther Bernt, dated 19 May 1964, confirming the attribution.

Very little is known about Pieter de Bloot except that he was active in the city of Rotterdam. He primarily painted genre scenes which show the influence of Adriaen Brouwer, Adriaen van Ostade (see lot 52 of the sales catalogue) and landscapes in the style of Jan van Goyen.

The present lot is a particularly fine example of his genre pictures about which Walther Bernt wrote ‘Also the de Bloot belongs to the best that this artist has produced’. Pieter de Bloot’s pictures are part of museum collections worldwide; for example the work entitled Peasant Dance in a Barn of 1634 in the Szépmüűvészeti Museum, Budapest.
