Filippo Palizzi
(Vasto, Abruzzo 1818–1899 Naples)
The Young Goatherd, signed, dated Fili Palizzi 1852, oil on canvas, 37 x 52 cm, framed (GG)
Filippo Palizzi is best known for his paintings of animals, of which the present lot is a fine example.
The young goatherd is holding a goat and looking into the distance, whilst the other animals are resting or playing next to him.
He introduced animals into his landscapes and the present lot is a good example of the en plein air technique of the time. Working in natural light became more important to the Barbizon painters during the mid-19th century.
Catalogued and illustrated in:
Mattia Limoncelli, Filippo Palizzi, Edizione del Comitato per le Onoranze a Filippo Palizzi, Naples, Volume MCMXXVIII, plate LIX (ill.). Derrick Pritchard Webley, Cast to the Winds, The life and work of Penry Williams, The National Library of Wales, p. 134, no.132.
