The artist, whose real name was Manuel Ussel De Guimbarda and who signed works executed after his sojourn in Seville with Wssel de Guimbarda, was one of the most important Spanish painters of this period. The painter’s family was well respected amongst Seville’s upper class and therefore it is no surprise that De Guimbarda received many commissions. His repertoire includes both historical and religious subject matter as well as portraits of famous and respected personalities in Seville society. He showed his works in numerous exhibitions, spreading his reputation far beyond Seville. He spent the last years of his life in Cartagena.
