Augustin Terwesten the Elder
(The Hague 1649–1711 Berlin)

Terwesten spent two years of his apprenticeship with the history painter Nicolaes Wieling, who in 1667 became court painter to the Elector of Brandenburg in Berlin. His subsequent master was Willem Doudijns, a specialist for ceiling paintings and monumental history paintings. From 1672 on Terwesten sojourned in Rome, from where he returned to The Hague in 1678. In the 1680s Terwesten painted numerous wall and ceiling paintings in The Hague and other Dutch towns. In 1682 he was one of the founder members of the Hague Academy. From 1690 on Terwesten lived in Berlin, where he was appointed electoral court painter in 1692. In his later years he worked as a teacher at the Berlin Academy, which he subsequently also headed as principal.
