Bavarian School, second half of the 18th century - Old Master Paintings

The Martyrdom of Saint Dorothy,
monogrammed at lower right: I. R., oil on canvas, 31 x 22.5 cm, framed

Saint Dorothy was born the daughter to Christian parents in Caesarea in 290 A.D. The pagan governor Apricius asked for her hand in marriage, but was rejected by her because she had committed herself to virginity for the sake of heaven. So the governor had her tortured and sentenced to death by decapitation. On her way to the execution site, Dorothy repeatedly pronounced the name of her betrothed, Jesus Christ. When this was overheard by the pagan lawyer Theophilus, who was standing on the wayside, he mockingly vowed that he would also believe in Jesus if Dorothy brought him flowers and fruit from the garden of her betrothed. Suddenly an angel appeared with a basket full of roses and pieces of fruit. Theophilus officially converted to Christianity on the spot, and the enraged governor had both of them, Dorothy and Theophilus, beheaded together.
