We are grateful to Nicholas Turner for suggesting the attribution. He believes that the present painting is an early work by Gennaris, probably executed before the painter travelled to France and England, where he worked at the courts of Louis XIV and Charles II.
The aristocrat Francesco Corte came from Modena and worked as an agent for Duke Francesco I d’Este (1610–1658).
