Portrait of Diana Sturt, Lady Milner (died in 1805),
oil on canvas, 78 x 65 cm, framed

Provenance:
Coll. Baroness Valentine Springer, née Baroness of Rothschild (1886–1969), Vienna;
judicial decree of the Vienna High Court of 20 July 1940 concerning the sequestration of the Springer family’s assets;
compulsory sale to the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, on 18 February 1941 (KHM, inv. no. 9001);
arrangement concluded on 26 November 1947 between the KHM and Valentine Springer concerning the restitution of seven paintings in exchange for the present composition;
decision of 3 May 2013 reached by the Art Restitution Advisory Board as to the restitution to the legal heirs of Baroness Valentine Springer.

The present portrait is a copy of the portrait of Lady Milner executed before 1795 (private ownership, England). In 1776, Diana Sturt (died in 1805) married Sir William Mordaunt Milner, 3rd Baronet.
