Lemoyne, the son of a notary, began his artistic career as a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen. In 1772 he moved to Paris, where he studied under Jean-Jacques Lagrenée and Maurice Quentin de La Tour. He was a successful and prolific artist who not only produced oil paintings and miniature portraits, but who was also a prolific draughtsman. In 1794 he returned to Rouen, where he was appointed professor of drawing at the École de Marine in 1799. He exhibited his works at the Paris Salons until 1817.
