A winter landscape with a caravan of merchants,
oil on panel, 73 x 112 cm, framed,
Jules van Loo, who came from a well-known family of artists, was called to the Académie Royale in 1784. In 1791 he travelled to Turin, where he was inspired by the winter landscapes of Francesco Foschi. His work unites a pronounced painterly rhythm and a vibrant narrative style. What seems to have been the present painting’s pedant was sold at the Vienna Dorotheum on 13 October 2010 as lot 493 (featuring almost identical dimensions).
