The present painting is based on a drawing by Bloemaert in Florence (Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi, inv. no. 8556), to which the two fleeing figures in the foreground were added (they are missing in a painting attributed to Bloemaert in the Yale University Art Gallery).
