Paul Baum

Paul Baum - Modern Art

(Meissen 1859–1932 San Gimignano)
Footpath on a grassy slope in a sandy meadow landscape, house and boulevard in the distance, signed P. Baum, oil on canvas, 45 x 65 cm, framed, (PS)

Literature:
C. & W. Hitzeroth, Paul Baum, Ein Leben als Landschaftsmaler, Marburg 1988, cat. raisonné no. F 79, p. 144 (full-page colour ill.)

This painting by Paul Baums was executed circa 1890-91 during a painting trip to Knokke-sur-mer. Thanks to his investigation of French Impressionist painting, Baum had developed an intense sense of colour, which is particularly evident in this summery landscape painting. The picture conveys an impression of a typical coastal scene in Flanders with its delicate, subtle coloration. The wide, sandy expanses of grass alongside the dunes are dominated by bushes and individual trees, which Paul Baum renders in a very detailed manner, as in other works by him. Paul Baum had already enjoyed success with works like this in 1891/92 at an exhibition in Weimar, where he was feted as the first German Impressionist to have succeeded in eschewing a sombre, staid painting style in favour of an Impressionist palette and spontaneous, loose brushwork.
