... After 1945, Mahringer’s special status within Austrian painting, particularly landscape painting, was reinforced. Whilst artists like Herbert Boeckl and Max Weiler continued with a gestural, expressive colour spot painting, which systematically moved towards abstraction, Mahringer cultivated a scumbled, draughtsman-like style, which adhered to the end to objectivity. The flat, markedly intense accumulation of colour dominated the work of most artists of Mahringer’s generation, but Mahringer preferred to paint in a transparent, delicate style, in which spatial depth was always at issue. Mahringer’s oeuvre made a highly individual and important contribution to the Austrian painting of his time. Anton Mahringer is thus one of the most important landscape painters of the 20th century in Austria.
Franz Smola, excerpt from above-mentioned literature.
