In 1998 Franz West received the Wolfgang Hahn Prize from the society for modern art at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. A condition of the prize is the purchase of a work, permanently on loan to and displayed at the museum.

The Kantine (25 tables and 100 chairs) is shown in the museum’s café. West takes the term Kantine from Immanuel Kant and explains in a text on the work: “The name of this installation (feminine noun) derives from the name Kant, transmuted into the German feminine form, whose thoughts on art are presented here in excerpts. A user, male or female, can expect here spaghetti Bolognese, Königsberger meatballs or something else, with an uninterested sense of well-being.”
