Gabriel Germain Joncherie
(active in France during the first half of 19th century)
‘Trompe l’oeil’ still life with objects from a cabinet of curiosities,
signed and dated lower right: Joncherie 1808,
oil on canvas, 59 x 72.5 cm, framed
Provenance:
South German private collection
Gabriel Germain Joncherie, whose dates of birth and death are not known, was active as a painter of interiors and still lifes in Paris. In 1831 and 1844 he exhibited his works in the Paris Salon. He is known for the originality of his compositions, in which he combines the traditional still life with the trompe l’oeil. The present painting displays a refined composition of an “image within an image”, which gives the viewer the illusion of an independent three-dimensional picture. The different levels fascinate the viewer like a puzzle, compelling him to look again and again in order to disentangle the complexity of the painting.
