South German private collection

The present painting was confirmed as Vogelaer’s autograph work by Fred Meijer of the RKD in 2006. He compares it with two works by Vogelaer in Viennese private collections as well as with a painting owned by the National Trust, Felbrigg Hall, Norfolk.

Karel van Vogelaer is considered one the most important flower painters of the 17th century. In 1693 he settled in Rome where his art soon found admirers. Noble families, such as the Pallavicini, purchased his elegant still lifes. Vogelaer occasionally collaborated with the figure painter Carlo Maratta.
