Michiel Simons was probably born in Antwerp and belongs to the Flemish artists’ group around Jan Davidsz. de Heem. His oeuvre includes still lifes with fruits, flowers and game. His paintings are also reminiscent of the works of Balthasar van der Ast in their use of motifs and their composition. Simons’ arranged opulent still lifes display traditional Netherlandish compositional features and a balanced use of light and shadow that is capable of creating both smooth transitions and stark contrasts. The tranquil aura of these works contrasts with the dramatic atmosphere of his still lifes with game, in which disquiet constitutes his stylistic feature.
