Joseph Roos was the grandson of the painter Philipp Peter Roos, called Rosa da Tivoli, and hence the great-grandson of the painter Johann Heinrich Roos. After his training in Vienna he travelled to Dresden in 1747, where he participated in the decoration of the opera house. From 1758 onwards, Rood took up permanent residence in Dresden as a court painter. In 1758 he became a professor of landscape painting at the newly established Academy. After a row with his colleague Giovanni Battista Casanova, Roos moved to Vienna to become director of the Imperial Picture Gallery. With the present painting Joseph Roos produced one his best works, proving a worthy heir to his grandfather.
