Besides Largillière and Rigaud, François de Troy was a member of the Académie from 1671. He was the most important portraitist of the Grand Siècle under King Louis XIV. He is primarily known for portraits of female sitters in mythological costumes. He painted not only the ladies of the royal family and the court, but also foreign princesses, such as Maria Anna of Bavaria, the future wife of the Grand Dauphin. One of his most important patrons was the deposed English king, James II, who had been living in exile in France since 1690.
