Lot No. 796 #

Pier Francesco di Jacopo Foschi

(Florence 1502–1567)
Madonna and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist,
oil on panel, 60 x 46 cm, framed

We are grateful to Louis Waldmann for confirming the authenticity of this work.

The present painting is a characteristic work by the Florentine Mannerist Pier Francesco di Jacopo Foschi. He executed several variants of this composition, such as the painting auctioned at the Dorotheum, Vienna, on 15 October 2013 as lot 513, and another version formerly in the Blumenthal collection, New York (see ill.). Foschi was a pupil of Andrea del Sarto, and this appears clearly also in the present painting. In 1536 he worked with Pontormo at the latter’s frescoes for Villa Medici in Careggi. Foschi was also influenced by Bronzino.
