A winter landscape with a caravan of merchants,
oil on panel, 73 x 112 cm, framed
Jules van Loo, who came from a well-known family of painters, became a member of the Académie Royale in 1784. In 1791 he travelled to Turin, were he was influenced by Francesco Foschi’s winter landscapes. His work is characterised by a painterly style combined with vivid narrative. The probable pendant of the present painting with almost identical dimensions was sold at the Dorotheum, Vienna, on 13 October 2010 as lot 493.
