Barent Graat, who first established himself as a landscape painter within the tradition of Amsterdam Classicism, devoted himself to the portrait genre later in life. His portraits are characterised by their lively, elegant compositions, rich colouration and a particularly fine execution of the figures’ faces. As an outstanding representative of the last generation of the ‘Golden Age’ of the Northern Netherlands, he also had a reputation as an authority on art. In 1672 the Prince Elector of Brandenburg called on him to participate in a committee of experts asked to review a collection that had been offered to the prince for purchase.
