A comparable painting by Jan Vermeer van Haarlem the Elder with similar dimensions (47 x 64 cm) was sold at the Dorotheum, Vienna, on 19 October 1993 as lot 93. The Haarlem landscape painter Jan Vermeer the Elder began as a pupil of Jacob de Wet, who did not, however, visibly influence him. Typical of his oeuvre are, in the words of Walther Bernt, “forest edges, paths decorated with riding or promenading figures meandering out of woods of high oak trees, views of sunny spots and leaves painted in impasto manner”. His landscape paintings are closely linked to works by Adriaen Verboom, Jan van Kessel and Salomon Rombouts.
