Dutch School, 17th Century
Samson and Delilah,
oil on canvas, 139 x 170 cm, unframed
The present painting is heavily influenced by Italian models: large, muscular figures dominate the foreground of the picture and the composition with a sitting Delilah, holding Samson in her lap, is probably modelled after Rubens’ famous composition at the National Gallery in London. The carpet on which the protagonists lie can be identified as a product from Oudernaarde-Edingen and/or Bruges, probably executed in the period between the last quarter of the 16th century and the first quarter of the 17th century. Typical is the dominant pattern of leaves, flowers and fruits. The image of the hare could represent a family crest. The obvious self-portrait of the artist in the figure on the left outer edge is, unfortunately, not very helpful for his identification.
An attribution to Jan Woutersz., called Stap (Amsterdam 1599–1663) has been suggested.
