Jacopo da Montagnana
(Montagnana c. 1440/50–1499 Padua)
St. Jerome,
tempera on panel, 100 x 41 cm, framed
The present painting was originally part of a triptych that was probably divided in the period after the Council of Trent. In the 16th century the panel was reshaped, received a new frame and the background was painted over, probably because the foreshortening in the original architectural background was no longer considered correct.
The attribution to Jacopo da Montagnana was supported by Federico Zeri and Andrea Bacchi and is supported by comparisons with other works with a confirmed attribution to the artist.
According to Vasari, Montagnana was trained in Giovanni Bellini’s workshop. Subsequently, he was active mainly in Padua, were he participated in the decoration of the Cappella Vecchia at Palazzo Arcivescovile.
