The woman portrayed here is not the Princess Amalie of Anhalt-Dressau, but rather Mrs Loder (née Richter, dates unknown), the wife of the renowned physician Justus Christian (von) Loder. Loder worked in Russia from 1807 as the personal physician of Tsar Alexander I. Tischbein also painted Mr. Loder’s portrait in 1798 (now in the Museum Georg Schäfer in Schweinfurt).
We are grateful to Dr Martin Franke for his identification of the woman depicted in the portrait.
