Marcello Bacciarelli

Marcello Bacciarelli - Old Master Paintings

((Rome 1731–1818 Warsaw)
Portrait of Countess Konstancja Tyszkiewicz, née Princess Poniatowska,
oil on canvas, 68 x 52 cm, framed

Marcello Bacciarelli was considered the most important painter at the court of Stanislaw August Poniatowski, the last Polish king. In 1775 the artist was commissioned to portray the monarch’s family. For this series of portraits, he chose a uniform size of approx. 70 x50 cm. A complete cycle, which also includes a variant of the present portrait, is now preserved in the Muzeum Narodowym in Poznan.

Autograph versions of individual portraits have repeatedly appeared on the market. In 2009 a portrait of Prince Michal Jerzy Poniatowski, Primate of Poland, was sold in Warsaw. No other versions of the present portrait are known besides that preserved in Poznan and the present variant.. Bacciarelli remained the court’s favourite portraitist until Poniatowski’s abdication and the partition of Poland. His works are characterised by an elegant style and sensitive characterisation of the sitters.
