François Hubert Drouais

François Hubert Drouais - Old Master Paintings

(Paris 1727–1775)
Portrait of an elegant lady,
oil on canvas, 92.5 x 73.5 cm, framed

We are grateful to Jean Jacques Petit for confirming the attribution after examining the painting in the original.

The works of the portraitist Drouais can be ranked among the most elegant artistic testimonials of the second half of the 18th century in France. Drouais received his first schooling under his father, Hubert Drouais, and then later under Boucher, C. J. Natoire and Carle van Loo. He became an Agrée of the academy by 1754, and a member of it in 1758. By his first salon (1755), the talent of the young artist had already been noticed by critics. His elegant refinement of courtly traditions through a spontaneous, informal character contributed to his popularity. He became relatively soon the favourite of the court and of the nobility. Drouais was sponsored by the Marquise de Pompadour as well as by the Comtesse Dubarry. Drouais had an almost monopolistic position as the portraitist of elegant society ladies in the 60s. Diderot wrote about him: “Il n’eut de son temps aucun rival sérieux dans les portraits de femmes et d’ enfants...”
