Hendrick de Clerk
(Brussels c. 1570–1630)
The Nativity,
oil on panel, 134.5 x 122 cm, framed
Hendrick de Clerck is documented as working in Rome in 1587 with a fellow painter from Brussels, Frans van de Kasteele. He returned to Brussels where he became member of the painter’s guild and was later appointed court painter to Archduke Ernest and his successors, Archdukes Albert and Isabella.
De Clerck was provided with a number of commissions following the destruction and removal of imagery by iconoclasts in Brussels. The style he developed displays the influence of Mannerist painters, particularly that of Marten de Vos (said to be his teacher), as well as suggestions of the influence of Maarten van Heemskerck and Cornelis Cort.
