We are grateful to Professor Filippo Maria Ferro for confirming the attribution of the present painting which is a characteristic work by Carlo Francesco Nuvolone. It can be dated to around 1645–50.

With the exception of some minor deviations, the present composition is identical to a painting by Nuvolone in the Suida-Manning Collection, today conserved in the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, Texas (see F. M. Ferro, Nuvolone una famiglia di pittori nella Milano del ‘600, Soncino, 2003, p. 215 and fig. 89a, p. 407). In the years around 1650, episodes from the Genesis enjoyed great popularity as subject matter among the Nuvolone family.
Carlo Francesco Nuvolone was the brother of Giuseppe Nuvolone, and he was an important representative of 17th-century Lombard painting He attended the Accademia Ambrosiana, where he studied under his father, Panfilo, and Giovanni Battista Crespi. His earliest signed work is the Miracle of Saint Martha (Venegono Inferiore). In 1645 he painted the Purification of the Virgin (Museo Civico, Piacenza).
