Flagellation of Christ,
Tempera on goldground panel, 26 x 20.8 cm, intergral frame
Stylistically the present panel shows a close affinity to the work of Simone Martini from the period immediately before his departure for Avignon, when he produced the Orsini Polyptych (in circa 1333). By as early as the late 1320s, there were already followers and collaborators of considerable quality working in the circle of Simone Martini, gathered around the figure of the older Lippo Memmi; among these was Barna da Siena, mentioned by Vasari, but whose identity has repeatedly been questioned by critics, and the so-called Master of Palazzo Venezia, whose given name derives from a panel with a Madonna and Child now preserved in the Museum of Palazzo Venezia in Rome. The present Flagellation of Christ offers an interesting point of comparison with the panel depicting Christ bearing the Cross conserved in the Frick Collection in New York and traditionally assigned to Barna da Siena.
We are grateful to Professor Alessandro Tomei for his help in cataloguing the present painting.
