Hans van Sant

Hans van Sant - Old Master Paintings

(active in Haarlem between 1630 and 1655)
A still life with a rummer glass, chicken, fruit and bread,
signed: (HA?) SANT,
oil on canvas, 74 x 58 cm, framed

Hans van Sant is one of the rare still life painters of the Haarlem school from the middle of the 17th century. During this period of the ‘monochrome style’, developed by Pieter Claesz. and Willem Claesz. Heda in Van Sant’s native town, artists concentrated on breakfast (ontbijtjes) and banquet (banketjes) still lifes exhibiting a plain and harmonious arrangement of objects on a table rendered in a very reduced palette.
Only a few documents exist regarding Van Sant’s life and work. Characteristic features of his oeuvre are a balanced composition, the simple arrangement of his still lifes against monochrome backdrops, and the tactile three-dimensionality of the objects rendered. This latter quality is impressively illustrated by the rummer, which frequently recurs in his works, such as in a horizontal still life formerly with Johnny van Haeften in London (see ill.).
