(Imst 1840-1895 Graz) A Summer’s Day near Samois, "La brouillard sur la Seine", on the reverse old handwritten label Samois, pre Fontainebleau, indistinctly inscribed 104 (?), oil on canvas, 69 x 101 cm, strip frame, craquelure (Rei)
Provenance: Direct family property.
Theodor von Hörmann, a landscape painter and one of the most important exponents of Austrian Impressionism, attended the Vienna Academy from 1873-1875. It was, however, his friendship with Emil Jakob Schindler and his study of the French Impressionists, rather than his teachers Eduard von Lichtenfels and Anselm Feuerbach, who had a significant influence on his art. Hörmann, a devotee of painting en plein air in the style of the Impressionists, made innumerable study trips, primarily to France, where he studied modern art and drew his inspiration. He executed several paintings in Samois, the setting for the present work. His landscapes display a lively brushwork and the light application of colour, yet without sacrificing a precise observation of nature.
