The historical painter Gustav Gaupp initially trained as a lithographer in Stuttgart before beginning his studies at the Munich Academy in 1870. His teachers included Karl Theodor von Piloty, and it was due to his influence that Gaupp started to focus more strongly on historical painting. This was followed by study trips to Italy and longer sojourns in Hamburg and London, where he dedicated himself to portrait painting. He spent the last years of his life near Stuttgart.
