(Altona 1812–1897 Naumdorf) Bay of Ieranto with Fishermen, Amalfi Coast, signed, dated Gurlitt 1852, oil on canvas, 41 x 62.5 cm, framed, (Rei)
Louis Gurlitt grew up in humble circumstances. His artistic talent was recognised and encouraged early. As a schoolboy he received drawing lessons, and later studied at the Academy of Art in Copenhagen. This was followed by study trips to Munich, Norway and Italy. An inner peace emanates from Gurlitt’s near-natural landscapes and this is characteristic of his œuvre.
