This powerful Janus figure has an incredibly deep patina formed from decades use. Dirt and smoke have created a thick ’skin’ that has protected it from insects. The animal figures are symbolic of royalty, chosen from a pantheon of animals imbued with power. The spider symbolizes longevity and wisdom. The leopards depict forcefulness and aggression. As a figure, it might have been independent like the Janus animal figures in the Kongo. 18th-19th century. 22 cm high, 32 cm long. Wood and organic matters.
