A very fine and early Lega mask, Democratic Republic of Congo.
This is one of a pair, collected by Emiel Lambrechts. Formerly in the collection of Professor Pierre Gossiaux, professor of Anthropology at the University of Louvain. The other is presently in the Tervuren Museum. Clearly from the same hand, the well-defined arches are unusual for Lega masks, the finely accentuated eyebrow, forehead and chin in perfect harmony with the concave face. Old and new traces of kaolin are placed on top of each other, signs of wear and small indigenous restoration on the inner eye give this mask a great depth and finesse. 22 cm.
