Lot No. 19

Cannibal fork or Iculanibokola Fiji.

Cannibal fork or Iculanibokola Fiji. - Tribal Art

22 cm high. Wood. 18th-19th century. The cannibal fork, or iculanibokola, was used by attendants during ritual feasts to feed chiefs and priests because they were not allowed to touch food with their hands. One of the most important ceremonies a chieftain participated in was the devouring of the enemy. Combining the significance of the event and the inability to use their hands, forks became a way to show power and influence. This example is finer and thinner than the more common bulbous ones.

Provenance:
Collection Karin Van Leyden (Charlottenburg-Berlin 1906 - Lugano 1977) certified by her son Ragnar Van Leyden. Collection Monsieur J. Timmermans, Bruxelles. (VJ)
