Michelangelo Unterberger

Michelangelo Unterberger - Old Master Paintings

(Cavalese 1695-1758 Vienna), The Deposition from the Cross, oil on canvas, 127 x 64 cm, framed,

Provenance: Austrian private collection.

Literature: N. Rasmo, “Per una biografia del pittore Giuseppe Alberti (1640-1716)”, in: Cultura Atesina, I/1947, p. 85;
J. Ringler, “Michelangelo Unterberger, Meister der Barockmalerei”, in: Tiroler Tageszeitung 1958, no. 146, p. 9;
idem, “Michelangelo Unterberger zur 200jährigen Wiederkehr seines Todestages”, in: Prisma 1958/59, p. 99;
J. Kronbichler, Michael Angelo Unterberger (1695–1758), doctoral thesis, Vienna 1976, p. 230;
Restauri ed acquisizioni, catalogue, Trento 1978, pp. 213/14, no. 124;
idem, Michael Angelo Unterberger 1695-1758, Salzburg 1995, p. 189, no. G 5.

The present painting dates from c. 1720, Unterberger’s early period. It repeats a work by Luca Giordano now in the Accademia in Venice. Further copies of this composition are in the parish church of Roncone and in the museums of Bergamo and Vicenza. The estate inventory of Christoph Unterberger, the father of Michelangelo Unterberger, mentions a copy by the son after a painting by Luca Giordano, which is probably identical to the present composition.
